Family Medicine Residency Program - About FMRP

medical students and doctors

The family physician is one who is educated and trained in Family Medicine – a broadly encompassing medical specialty. Family Physicians possess unique attitudes, skills and knowledge that qualify them to provide continuing and comprehensive medical care. They provide health maintenance and preventive services to all family members regardless of sex, age or type of problem, be it biological, behavioral or social. Because of their background and interactions with the family, these specialists are best qualified to serve as patient advocates in all health-related matters. Family physicians extend their care through the appropriate use of consultants, health services and community resources.

With more than 89,400 members, the American Academy of Family Physicians is one of the largest medical organizations in the nation. It traces its origins back to 1947. Family Medicine was recognized as a medical primary specialty on February 8, 1969. The Academy began certifying board examinations in 1970 and conducting annual re-certification examinations in 1976.

The Army's first Family Medicine residency program started in 1973. Darnall's program joins the six other Army Family Medicine programs:
