The L&D unit in Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center consists of:
- 9 Birthing suites (Labor / Delivery / Recovery)
- 3 Antepartum rooms
- 6 Outpatient triage rooms
- 3 Operating room suites
- 1 Recovery room for Post Surgical care of a Cesarean Section delivery
The unit has open visitation hours and family members are welcome to remain in the Birthing Suite during the delivery of the infant, as the mother desires. The mother and infant normally remain in the birthing suite for 1.5 to 2 hours after delivery before transferring to the Mother Baby Unit. Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center averages 220 deliveries per month and 600-800 outpatient visits.
The L&D policies and procedures are in compliance with the following regulatory guidance:
- American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN)
