Disposition and Retrieval of
Inactive Records
Most inactive records are held at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center for two (inpatient records) to three years (outpatient records) after the end of the treatment year before retirement to National Personnel Records Center (NPRC), St. Louis, MO:
Health Records (Active duty)
Health records are not retained locally upon retirement or ETS. If you retired/ETS prior to:

- Army - October 16, 1992
- Air Force - May 1, 1994
- Navy - January 31, 1994
- Marine Corps - May 1, 1994

If you filed a claim with the VA, your record is maintained by the VA facility near your home.
Outpatient Records
Outpatient records are held locally for three years from the last treatment year. For instance, if you last used record in January to December 2000, your record will be retired in early 2004: You may write to St. Louis, MO., and request copies:

All inquiries for the inpatient records should be made to:

You must provide:
- Patient’s name
- Status (retiree, military, family member, etc.)
- Name of treatment facility
- Last year of treatment
- Sponsor’s SSN
- Branch of service
- Dates of service
- Type of treatment (health record, outpatient record, etc.)
- Forwarding address/phone number
- Signature (important)
- Remarks as applicable
